II. Writing a Hypothesis

A hypothesis is an educated guess about the outcome of an experiment BRFORE YOU COMPLETE THE EXPERIMENT!!! Good hypotheses are usually “If…then… because” statements.  The “because” is a well researched reason why you think the way you do.  Look at the following examples of an airplane experiment:

“I think that Airplane A will fly the farthest.” Text Box: Not a good hypothesis because it has no reason why you think it will fly the farthest.
“I think that Airplane A will fly the farthest because it looks like it would fly the farthest” Text Box: Not a good hypothesis because it has a reason but the reason is not based on any research.
“I think that Airplane A will fly the farthest because it has larger wings and the wings of the airplane create lift which helps the airplane fly” Text Box: OK hypothesis, it is well researched but not in the “if…then…because” format
“If fly two types of airplanes, then airplane A will fly farthest because airplane A has larger wings and the wings of the airplane create lift which helps the airplane fly.  Text Box: GREAT HYPOTHESIS!!!!
